Thanks. So far, I've attended Wheating and Tipsy, they were both on the same day, so that was Sunday the 21st. Tipsy and Wheating, and I had a blast at Wheating, me and my one foot, because if you guys don't know, I have one leg. Okay, I don't have one leg, but my leg is fractured, but I'm still outside, same way, you know?

So yeah, Brockfoot 2024.

There we go. So I've been Brockfoot 2023 and Brockfoot 2024. Guys, I cannot take another year, another cropover, of being Brockfoot. I can't do it. I can't.

I mean, I know I'm competitive, but yeah, I was gonna say, as as the first Brockfoot of the history of Brockfootness in Cropover, um I am saying that I officially hand over the title to you. That's one title I don't want. Yeah. Well you oh you earn it nonetheless.

Yeah. And then um Tipsy started at 3. But um, yeah, I had a time. We ting was my favourite out of the two. I had a time, DJ Joel was down there, uh DJ Kai was down there, obviously bumped into some major and soca artist, bumped into like a guy from London I know from the soaker scene. I'm like, what the hell are you doing here? But he had an absolute time, absolute time. First time at Barbados, love it. Um but the songs that are playing out here, I'm actually quite surprised, in all honesty, because if you know me, if you know me, you know that I love Bam Bam by Lil Ring. Exactly, but I'm not really hearing it get played much, like on the radio, yeah, but like when I'm outside at parties, because I've been to like a few little pop-up parties and bars and stuff, I'm not really hearing it get played like that. But do you know what song is predicted to win Road March? No Bruce Lee Almighty Tomorrow.

But that's more like a singing song, yeah.

Yeah, it's a shocker for me, it is, but that's the one that's that everybody loves and they get wild too. When I say get wild, like they're jumping up and and all that stuff. So I'm surprised it's not spinny or bam bam or anything like that. Crazy.

Yeah, I'll I'll be honest, I it's not a complete bad song, I would say, tomorrow, but it's like uh another similar to come home and like you know, the build-up singing and then just jumping up and down a couple of times, and yeah, this is true, it's not doing however I'm not there, so maybe if I would be in a band and I hear the song, I might react differently, but you know, let's see what happens.

Um I am supposed to be playing on a truck with Kadoum, and I'm not doing costume and all of that. Supposed to be playing with colours this year, which I did last year as well. Uh 4 day, I am jumping with colours. Um definitely, yeah.

So I am very curious how it was because I remember last year when we were both still in Barbados jumping with colours for a uh four day. It was so so when I first started playing uh with the uh with colours, it was 2018, and then it was like a nice mid-sized band, I would say. I've played a couple of more times, obviously not during a own time because they weren't allowing it. Um but last year it got so big and so popular, uh, it was a different experience. So I very much wonder what's gonna happen this year.

Yeah, I don't think um this year there will be as many people. Uh, because remember last year it actually sold out, but they've still got packages, and I saw like a video of Brian speaking about, as in Brian the band leader for colours, speaking about um like bands are not getting as many people like buying packages and stuff this year. So I don't know what that is. Yeah, yeah, but for me I prefer it that way because last year it was too big, and then you kept getting the stormers and all of that, yeah. So I'm hoping it's a lot smaller this year, please.

We will talk about some other upcoming events and also some past events, like Vincey already had the carnival, so that's Elusia. So we'll talk about the winners there. Um yeah, well let's uh let's get right into that then.

This is Soka Azoka Chronicles. So I said we're gonna talk about future events, but I only have one event that I know of, well, that I know of that I'm gonna attend, I have to say. Um Rotterdam Carnival. Because normally around this time I would be in the warmth of the Caribbean with Charles in Barbados. This year though, I am not going, so I will be attending a local event for me, because I am from the area of Rotterdam. So I will be looking into Rotterdam's summer carnival. Yeah, it's this uh it's still coming up, so um a couple of days from now we will be having that. Uh normally I will go from Thursday till Monday to all the events that were there. This year though, I am not going to do that. I'm getting old, I have responsibilities, and so on and so on. But I am going to my number one favourite, which is an absolute recommendation if you ever ask me. It is a boat ride, uh boat vet called Ecstasy. Not like in the drug, but it's extra SEA, exactly. Thank you. Just to clarify. Um, because it is the Netherlands, of course. But yeah, um, looking forward to that. That's it's a three-layer boat. There's uh three different types of soca: small island soca, French Ahsoka, and the mainstream soca. So excited about that. I do have to say that I was a bit taken aback by the prices of these events these years. Oh it feels like it's gotten very expensive. Uh, 40 euros for a ticket for one vet. And that's a three-hour boat ride, so you know, it's steep if you ask me. Uh, but it is the best vet, so uh there's definitely a lot of other events planned. Um, the Dutch are a bit hesitant these days when it comes to the parade. Uh, last year there was a whole drama. I'm not sure if you remember from previous episodes, but there was a whole drama about uh a ban on whining because it was uh supposedly a family event and it shouldn't be indecent dancing, and oh my god, they they knew they said that there was a big backlash, yeah, rightfully so, of course. So we'll see what happens this year. Um, they are changing some things, so there will be no more outdoor events, all the events will be indoor. Really? Uh this has to do uh yeah, yeah, yeah. Uh so there were shootings in the past and also last year, so they're trying to contain it and control it a bit more by doing that. The parade is still outside, of course. Yeah, but uh yeah, we'll see how it goes this year.

Yeah, um, so let's start with Vincy Mass, obviously, because that came first. So the winner, the power soaker winner was Fireman Hooper with a song called Bad Company. So if you want to check that song out, go ahead, go on YouTube, Spotify, wherever, and just give that a listen. And also the rag Asoka winner was Hans John with a song called Spectacular. Again, check that out on YouTube just to give it a little listen. Now Road March. So there was a toss-up between who the winner would be, like in the run-up to Vince Mass. So there were lots of different songs that were called, but the winner was Problem Child with Carnival Jumby.

Clean up my mess. God damn. And on to St. Lucia Carnival, which was literally the following week. Ricky T won. He actually won twice with the same song. So he won the Road March with Look Something to Talk About, and he also won the Power Soaker. It makes sense with the same song. So big up Ricky T on that one. Double whammy. Love that.

Yeah, it makes sense. It's it's like uh it's like a variant on do something crazy. So it's uh it always works well in the in the season. So a pretty good one, very much.

Definitely, and then the groovy soaker monarch winner was Sly with Damn Proud Lucian. So just the title of that song alone, I'm not really literally not surprised it won. Um yeah, but I had quite a few friends that were in Lucia Carnival, and they were telling me that Bouillon was getting slapped at the events on the roads.

It's the new thing, I'm telling you, it's the new, the new, the new, the small island that's gonna be a big island soon.

You don't know how much that that fills my heart with joy. Because remember, I was saying to you that from the time I got back from Dominico Carnival, I was converted to bouillon. I'm a bouillon babe.

So it it honestly, I love that I'm hearing it a lot. I'm not really hearing it too too much over here in Barbados, but I do know that when I play on that truck, I'm throwing out a good few bouillon songs. I just need to make sure I have the clean versions because I don't want to get chucked up.

Hot and sweaty. But we will make do. Thank you so much for giving us your time. Um, like I said, you've been in the business for 20 years. So could you tell us how it all started?

Oh, to tell you the truth, um, I really started out in the dubbing business. You understand? And I've been doing it for the past couple years, and in 2006, that way I record my first song when I went in the soccer business. Nice. In 2006, uh, when the parish crown like the socamonak, and it's from there, I start doing my soccer.

Oh, nice, doing it for a while now.

Yeah, yeah, man.

I'm I'm I'm going ahead of the business already a bit, but last year you had a very big hit as well.

100%. So you you went from dubbing into soca. Um what made you make that step? Like what was it where you're like, you know what, I'm done with this dubbing. I actually want to go into soca.

Well, I didn't really done with the dubbing. In Grineda at the time now, the um the dubin, the music, the industry for the dubin is very hard to get out there. You understand? It's more the modi soaker what really was out there. Oh, okay.

Because we had a lot of guys used to do dubing before me, and they were just like in the country, it's no marketing out there. You understand?

So I decided no, I'm gonna try this soaker to see if I could get the regular music out there too.

I uh we've been to Grenada once, actually, me and Sharon, and we've enjoyed it so much. 2019 we were there for Spice Mask. Exactly. It's been been a while already, but yeah.

So going into the music outside of the top three yet, because um I've been looking up to uh locking up some of your newer music and actually seeing uh one song, uh They Watch Me, that is I think very, very new, if I can say that. Yeah, and there's also a bashment rhythm, but you're on the rhythm together with uh Leonetti and Tonda and also um Charlie Black. So big names. Yeah is that something like this we're gonna actually play the song a bit because I it needs to be shared as well, because I actually really enjoy the song. Um but was this actually like this let's say corporation or being part of that rhythm? Was that something that also made like possible by the farmer, or was it already in the works, for example?

No, it's not really in a um to tell you the truth. Um when they sent me that reading, he he had really recorded a song on the rhythm already.

Yeah, he had do a song, yeah. Like Nati and Thunder, they had to do that song on the reading. And he said he said that before he sent the rhythm for me, he said to me, I have a rhythm and know you're gonna like it. Because I want to put you on it, because I know you can dub, and it's like a rag asoka. He said, I need you on that rhythm. You understand? And I was like, Oh, I want to hear the rhythm. And when I read him into it, he was like, Yeah, he got me. I was like, Well, like I go back in back in the dub in now because when I had the rhythm now, the rhythm had a bunks, like you know, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

I start feeling the rhythm, man, and he sent the rhythm for me, and I just do me a song on it like that.

So I see how the ladies and them dancing, how the man and them getting on, you understand? I sit back, look at it, try to build a visor for it because it was like great experience for me to looking at the people, how they react into certain songs and how they dancing, you understand. So I was like, Oh, I gotta put a song in, put some lyrics in something like that, and be a tune, man. Yeah, but it's like a song for the road. I really do the song for really the road, you know, like the DJ Hookup and the radio station couple, none of the competition song, but I really do it for the road, like okay, dance, you can hear it, yeah, yeah, yeah. You can play it anyway, you understand? Yeah, I didn't really take, I didn't really do it for no competition.

People have to be very skeptical in what you eat in and what you drinking, especially when you go to certain places, you don't know people, it doesn't drink, you understand. And then I left the garden for about five minutes or ten minutes because I just went out just to come back. And that vendor, a lady, she does she the market vendor. She phoned me up and tell me she she and she will come into my garden to buy some stuff.

I'm walking in the garden, and as I leave the garden and I went down there and I come back with Pete Papa, and I did telling him something somebody was watching me, and things like that. And he was like, But you had to build a song on that, and just like how he said that to me, I stuck, I stuck it. I went down in the studio, and when I went in the studio, I met another guy who was recording, and I tell the guy I just want to put on the piece, and I will come back and finish it. And when I went on the piece, I just do a verse and a chorus. Yeah, I left it for about a whole month, and he was bothering me to come and finish the song. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, and I start thinking then I don't busy to work on it. I was just I don't busy man. I go, but he keeps bothering me, man. He was like, Man, that's long in code. You come and finish the song. So I just leave a and I go down and I just listen the piece what he has, the voice and the chorus, and I say, Okay, I will finish that song today. And it's just like that, I finished the song, and that was it.
