SPEAKER_04And this is Soka Azoka Chronicles. First up, we have Shorns that has been, once again, I'm not jealous, but you know, once again, to Barbados.
SPEAKER_06Barbados!
SPEAKER_04So how was it? Was it nice and warm, and was the beach nice, and he's drinking a lot of alcohol?
SPEAKER_06It was fabulous, fabulous, fabulous. But you know, it's always a great time when I'm in BIM. You know how it goes. Um, but yeah, I'm not gonna talk too much because not it wasn't the last episode, it was the episode before the Miami episode, when I was literally talking for years, bro. Like if you didn't stop me, I'd still be talking now.
SPEAKER_04You're still talking today for that episode, exactly.
SPEAKER_06Exactly. So all I'm gonna say is a great time was had. Um my favourite effect for the season was Wheating Cruise, not the Wheating Juve, it was actually the Wheating Cruise. Um yeah, it could have it could have gone left because it was meant to be on Harbourmaster, which as you know is in Spice Town in the north, yeah, but the sea was really choppy up there, so all the cruises on the harbour master basically had to be moved. So they moved it to the Dream Chaser, which is the the one that they use for the colours cruise. 100% didn't have to travel as far. Yeah, so I was like, yes, but then the the cruise was almost sold out, so I was like, oh my god, how are they gonna fit everybody on the Dream Chaser? Because you know how big the Harbourmaster is, it's got like two floors, yeah. Um but alas, everybody managed to fit, and I had an absolute epic time. And afterwards I was uh quite, you know, hammered, as the Brits would say. Yeah, that was good though. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I went to Soaker State of Mind, they had one as well for independence. That was that was good. That was really good. But um, yeah, it was fun, and that's all I am going to say about Barbados Independence. SPEAKER_04As mentioned before, this month we had the absolute pleasure to talk with Edit Rankin. Edit Rankin has skyrocketed out of some place where we didn't know he was into a place where we cannot see the future of Soka without him.
SPEAKER_06Yep, yep, yep.
SPEAKER_04This is all very dramatic, but I think it's a good introduction to uh our interview with uh Edit Rankin. It's it's been a pleasure, it's a great guy. Uh we had some surprises during the interview, so without further ado, Charles, I think we should have a listen.

SPEAKER_06No problem, man. Anytime. Honestly, we we just appreciate that you've taken your time out of your busy day. You know, just give us a little time to have a chat. So big up yourself, man. Honestly, appreciate you a lot.
SPEAKER_04Blessing. So for me, when I was doing my research, and as everybody knows, I love my research. Uh-huh. Um, I figured that you didn't start out as an artist, first of all, but you also didn't start out into soca, if I'm not mistaken.
SPEAKER_02That is yeah.
SPEAKER_04What did you start out as?
SPEAKER_09So I started producing hip-hop while um time for maybe about 2011.
SPEAKER_06Oh wow, okay.
SPEAKER_09And then yeah, so then 2013 is when I really started to sing RB and hip-hop.
SPEAKER_06Oh, nice, okay. Versatile, lovely hip.
SPEAKER_09Exactly, exactly. Like I always said before, I'm a hip hop and RB artist at heart. You know, okay. Yeah, yeah. I grew up in Brooklyn, born and raised in Brooklyn, but I have Incention Roots. So yeah, I was doing hip-hop for a good while, uh, real good while. I put out a couple of EPs, I put out uh an album called 458.

SPEAKER_09Yeah, seen that, yeah. Um that and then it's just been about 2018 where I really got into soccer. Uh-huh. I've always been a DJ. So I've always been um a DJ from the age of like nine. And I oh wow, that's long. Nice. Yeah, uh like I've been playing music for you know, music is mighty. Yeah, you know is so um I've always been around soccer. Obviously, the family is West India. Exactly. I've always been playing soccer. Okay, I was I was in a sound commission song bigger, Micah. I was in a Trinidadian sound system commission sound from like 2016 to maybe about 18 or 17 or wrong, so so I was playing soaker for a long time, you know, like a real long time. Yeah, yeah. Decided that I kinda tired of soccer, let me try hip-hop.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and then I hip hop and say, Let me go back to so are these two two genres for you that are like seamlessly going into each other, or is that like uh you have a hip hop side and you have a soca side, for example? Like, how how do you mix these two genres?
SPEAKER_09I mean the if you ever listen to the hip-hop, the hip hop still had some Westinian influences. Okay. Um kind of like sort of what Drake, you know, Drake, you go here one or two lines, he goes say ting, and you know, yeah, yeah, yeah. The language was there, even you know, in some of the production, um, the things that I would sample were like reggae old reggae, dance hall, like old reggae. Okay, you know what I mean? Like if you soker now though is a complete different I think with the production, if I had to say anything, it's more solely productive, you know, well the you could kind of tell, like what is that? So beat always uh how we come up, like men always ask me how you come how you how you make that into a soccer beat, like bro. I I mean so I I guess in that sense with the production side, it helped them because it's a bit different. Yeah, singing though, it it was completely I had to learn to sing soccer in a sense.
SPEAKER_04It's a whole different thing, right?
SPEAKER_09Yeah, yeah, definitely. Yeah, the right the singing, the structuring of you they're gonna layer like one or two, three tracks, and so you minus 21 tracks. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Nice, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So was it was it a natural like switch? Because like again, like you said yourself, it's it's quite different. Writing is difference in in producing, um, and it it might be easier to just stick to hip hop, right? But something you said, nah, I'm doing this.
SPEAKER_09It was fun again, I guess. You know what I mean? Because when you're producing hip-hop for so long, you already have formula. You have this formula, you know, you have this formula. I didn't per se have a formula, I mean I have the formula for so now, but before what I was formula, but before, like the rhythms, it would be like luck, like in a sense, like oh I mean still trying to figure out what instruments to use.
SPEAKER_06Okay, exactly.
SPEAKER_09Instrumentation or you know, four hit the floor, more so it's four floor, four hit the floor all the time. So you know what kind of chords and yeah, it took a while to understand, like okay, you know, animation. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Nice, nice, and it's actually so soak-wise, you've been in the game for since 2018, you said, right? With a little bit of of mixing with hip-hop and then some soaking. This year has been a very good year for you, I believe.
SPEAKER_09Oh, yes. I would say this yeah, I'm very fortunate and blessed, I'm thankful that things catch on, you know. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Is the breakout yeah, yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_04Exactly. I know, real thankful and blessed.
SPEAKER_06Definitely.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah, and and and so are we, because we get to listen to this, these, these pearls of music, you know.
SPEAKER_06So exactly, exactly. Because I'm not gonna lie to you. The first time I well, I'd heard of you before, but I'd not paid attention, if that makes sense. And then I saw you perform at it. Was it the the juve in New York? What was it? The red dance, red dance juve, yeah, and I see you come out, you had your crutches, and you had a tingle leg. I was like, rah.
SPEAKER_04Oh shit. What happened there?
SPEAKER_06And I saw you go up on the stage, I was like, rah. I was like, see how this guy performs, and then I think you started off with um best experience. I think you started with that song, and I was like, Yeah, I'm feeling this. Yes, and then I believe you you performed was it Yulai? I think you performed that as well. Your lie. And I was like, Your lie, yeah, and I was that's that's my song, that's my song.
SPEAKER_02So that's when I paid attention to you.
SPEAKER_06Listen, let's not get into that right now. This this isn't about me today. Then I saw you in Miami, but I didn't see you perform, but you were at SSS, and I actually took a selfie with I think it was Terra the Governor, and you're like in the background of my picture, so I'm like, hey, look at you. But it looks like you're trying to cover your face though. But yeah, so since then, I've then obviously searched for more of your songs, and I'm like, oh my god, he sings that song. Oh my god, he's on that rhythm, and it's just like, yeah, now I'm paying attention.
SPEAKER_04And you when that happens, then you know you're doing the right thing. Exactly. It's a breakup moment, so it's exactly so speaking up yourself.
SPEAKER_06Can I just ask, how did you hurt your I think it was your knee, right?
SPEAKER_09Yeah, I wish I had a I wish I had a nice crazy story to tell you where the doctors tell me I'm sitting down and I standing up and whining and party too much, but exactly I fell off my motor scooter. Oh no, shit and fractured it it it it was it was bad, but I didn't have the tick on no surgery or anything like that. So okay, I was a little immobile, but as you see me, I still outside them.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you you were outside clothes outside, I was just hobbling up on that stage like I'm outside match up or not, I'm outside. I'm outside.
SPEAKER_04I love that. That's the energy you need.
SPEAKER_06Hey, listen, honestly, love it, absolutely love it. And how's the recovery going going at the moment?
SPEAKER_09Not using crutches anymore. Nice, nice walking on, you know what I mean? You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_06No, sorry to um divert from so I just I had to know what happened to the knee. And do you know what I did as well? I started scrolling through your Instagram to try and figure out when it happened. I was looking at videos of when you know your knees fired, and then it was just like suddenly, boom, I see the the bracing on your legs, so I'm like, oh so you also do in uh do uh research sometimes, yeah. But I like to do research when it comes to drama, yeah.
SPEAKER_09Exactly. You know what? Is it true?
SPEAKER_06Typical woman, typical woman, in it. Listen, no comments, I know, boy, but yeah, anyway. I'll let RKU do the talking because I I the thing about me, you'll learn, I keep going off topic and talking about things that that don't have any.
SPEAKER_04Are also important, you know.
SPEAKER_09So that's another problem. On different side by side the music. This is true.
SPEAKER_06That that's that's my forte, that's what I'm good at.

SPEAKER_06Alright, so at number three, we have Alone. So tell us a little bit about that song. Like, how did you come up with the song and any interesting stories about it? Or just tell us a little bit about the song.
SPEAKER_09Alone, Alone is really um a pickup, I could say like part two of a song that I really broke out in. So I have a breakout song in St. Vincent.
SPEAKER_07Okay.
SPEAKER_09Yes, yes, so it was kinda a play of The idea of like food. Me woman, but so how I so I'm thinking like how I how I could spin that off, boy. Like how I could and we have a thing in the Caribbean it's called sweet food. I don't know if it's called the same in Barbados, Trini and Vincy. I ain't gonna really tell all you what sweet food is. You gotta look at that. Yeah, I mean the food for you. You get hook. Yeah, yeah. You get hook. You know what I mean? So that that's what I'll know. Me woman gives in trouble, but the cali she alone. I feel she put something in my food. Okay, yes.
SPEAKER_04The video is also funny. I've seen this. I had to laugh about that video as well.
SPEAKER_09If you watch the music video, you could kind of see what sweet food is about.
SPEAKER_04Exactly.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, man.

Did you so because you're a producer originally, but do you also produce all your own songs or is it like rhythms?
SPEAKER_09Yes, so I could say 95% 90% of the rhythms that I sing, I produce. So I've produced everything.

SPEAKER_09Multi-talented, yeah. Probably bless you, problem shall butter, grabber is all that rhythm.
SPEAKER_04Um Terry Governor. Yeah, and I feel that rhythm was not played enough, but again, I will not go into you know too much discussion there, but yeah, that was a big tune.
SPEAKER_06Definitely because we had um the grab a song as our song of the month a good few months back, or is it I think it was even last year now.
SPEAKER_04No, or was it earlier this year? That must have been in like carnival season for the years of flying, honestly. Yeah, it is, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_09Yeah, it is. Blessings, man, blessings. Um, that song well, um, if if if a lot of people do know or don't know, um, I work with Problem Child with 95% of my projects, right? Okay, nice. And problem have been cool before so, like before music.

SPEAKER_09Yeah, so when I started singing soccer, the person I went to to help me formulate how 100%. Perry is parry jack. He always go cuss me everything. When he sees it, he just get vexed because I just always call him Harry. But it's Harry.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, Perry Jack.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm calling Perry one parry, Perry and Problem are the people who helped me reach to where I am today.
SPEAKER_05Nice.
SPEAKER_09Nice. So back to best experience. Problem child did her real soldiers, gun pen down, dunny gun, because if you don't know, problem child is kind of a uh a maniac, like he like he could six, seven songs, like sitting there just having it. Has he finished one? Like the man can write four, five, ten tunes to one rhythm. I yeah, so I I'm struggling to one tune only. Nice, so I care I had to come up with something. So it's it's like a it could be like half a month. At least we what felt like half a month, it could be really like two weeks though, or a week. Like just every day trying to try to find an idea, trying to find an idea. One morning, like I feel like something coming, but I go in the shower, and the melody comes to me. Just like man for your hand. Listen, this is shower, yeah? Because I don't wanna I don't want to forget the idea because we say a cowboy, take a fast one, just in and out and I'll go back to my candy. I said, boy, I can't I got a melody, mm-hmm. But I don't have a word. And I said, I said, nah, that's it, right? I said, Yeah. I said, that's a problem. I don't say nah, boy, it's bad. I'm gonna say, bro, next day, he only next day, next morning, no. The man singing it back back to me, telling me yo, you don't know how infectionate that that melody is. Yeah, I see when I catch a problem doing that, I say, yeah, how one? Yeah, exactly. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's it. I'm going to finish the song now. As I catch it, I'll finish it. Yeah. Now in the now he helped me with. I say, yeah, you say verse bad, he said verse bat. I say, alright, song done. So I said, Alright, I done. So it took a while for it to come, but once it did, it fly. Yeah, it was worth the wait, of course.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, 100%. But that's that's exactly it. It's infectious, and that's exactly what you need.
SPEAKER_06It's yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_04It's it just encompass encompasses the entire feeling you get, right? Because everybody around this time, it's it's like December time by the time this airs, and everybody's like cold, and it's just like oh carnival. Yeah, carnival is uh the best text.
SPEAKER_06You know, it's like yeah, honestly, every carnival lover that is their tune. Yeah, all of us can relate, honestly. Yeah, love it.

SPEAKER_09Again, another rhythm. I produced the Jumby Hard rhythm. Uh produced um this one is kind of a funny one because, in a sense, that the rhythm was on a back burner. Oh, really? Yeah, because we were so focused with um band parade and end up doing Festival of Fire Rhythm, which I co-produced with DJ Avalanche. So that's that's terror won the monarch with this year. Yeah. So we were focused on those two projects because we we had such a crazy class, and you know, uh cast and you know, Vinci and Grenada is mostly power. You know, when it comes to it it was a lot of groovy, a lot of raga, as we would say, come on, yeah, I loved it. But we love the power, so we were focused on band parade and festival of fire. But I say, you know what, I as I have two power, I at least still want to put out a groovy. Um, I had send the rhythm to film already. Uh Fimba said he had a song. So I'm just saying, I let me see who I could let me see if I could just gather up a cast.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_09Um and I think I had send the rhythm to problem to send to keep currency. Problem. Problem, you know, again, works so you know, certainly he's literally on every rhythm. Every rhythm. Problem's on it. What rhythm is that again, boy? Like man, I send him back the rhythm. Man, like he catches, man, like, oh god, this rhythm bad. I gotta put it myself. I say, ah, here we go.
